PREFACE
The Parish of Bothal up to thirty years ago consisted of the ancient Parish of Bothal, including the Chapelry of Hebburn» and of the Parish of Sheepwash.
The Parish of Bothal was divided into four townships : — Bothal Demesne, Pegswood, Longhirst, and Old Moor ; the Chapelry of Hebburn was divided into seven townships : — Hebburn, Cockle Park, Tritlington, Fenrother, Earsdon, Earsdon Forest, Causey Park ; the ancient Parish of Sheepwash was divided into two townships : — Sheepwash (consisting of the glebe) and Ashington, making thirteen townships in all. The acreage came to 15,930 acres.
In restoring the church at Bothal in 1884, many pieces of broken Saxon crosses were found used as rubble for the walls of the chancel. A stone coffin for a child, with a few bones, was found under the present chancel wall. The fragments of the crosses have been sent to the Society of Antiquaries in Newcastle, and set up there in the Blackgate Museum.
There is a fine monument in alabaster in the church of Ralph, Lord Ogle, and his wife, Margaret, daughter of Sir William Gascoign. He died in 1513. Mr. Knowles says it is the finest in the county next to that of Sir Ralph Grey in Chil- lingham church.* It is probable that he beautified the church by raising the roof of the aisles and filling the windows with stained glass, of which small but fine fragments remain.
The present low roof of lead was probably substituted for a high-pitched one in 1576, as that date was found cut on one of the beams when the church was repaired in 1887.
A little more than a mile from Bothal up the Wansbeck, in the midst of the wooded banks, are the remains of an oratory, or very small chapel. Nothing is known of its origin, but as the first hermit of Warkworth was said to be a Bertram, the double connexion of the same family and the similar situation may be

more than a coincidence. It is known as the * Lady Chapel,* and gives its name to the Chapel Wood, and the 'Chapel Flower,' or Herb Paris {Parts quadrifoltum)^ which was some- what plentiful there before the modern collector swept the woods of all that was worth taking.
Higher up the river is St. Catherine's Well. There is also a well below Sheepwash, called St. Margaret's Well. Many years ago this well became dry, owing, it is supposed, to the spring being drained off by the pits in the neighbourhood : but it has begun to flow again lately. There are no legends on record attached to these wells.
In Hebburn Chapelry there was a chapel near Causey Bridge, said to be one of the resting places of St. Cuthbert's body. There are no remains of it to be seen.
The Rectory of Sheepwash was probably an ancient Hospital and Bridge Chapel combined. Notice of a Hospital is found in 1379. The glebe lies on both sides of the river, in order to command both ends of the bridge ; in the south side it is in Bedlingtonshire and county of Durham, but always reckoned in Northumberland.
At Morpeth there was a similar Bridge Chapel or Chantry close to the old bridge, which, from its high pitch and narrow- ness, was so dangerous that travellers might well offer or pay vows for a safe passage. The upsetting of a coach at last con- demned it.
No remains of the ancient chapel at Sheepwash exist, but the font is preserved in Bothal church.
While digging the foundations of the new bridge at Sheep- wash in 1900, a low arch was uncovered five or six feet below the present bed of the river, with a large oak beam in it, evidently the remains of an old timber bridge which had been washed down and caught in the arch. The arch probably was part of a causeway across the river ; and it was the duty of the incumbent to keep in repair the causeway and maintain the ferry. Briefs for the repair of the bridge are recorded in the parish books of Bedlington.
The rectories of Bothal and Sheepwash seem to have been held by one incumbent since the year 1615, but William Duxfield in 1 57 1, and Robert Copperthwaite in 1587, held both with other benefices.

The ancient Parish of Bothal having been held by one family from Saxon times illustrates the manner in which parishes were formed and tithes conferred : and also how manors were dis- tributed under the early Norman Kinj»fs.
It is probable that the heiress of the Saxon owner Guysulf or Gisulph was married to Guy de Balliol's second son, William Bertram, and so through the families of Bertram, Ogle, Cavendish, Holies, and Harley in the female line the manor has come to the Bentincks, Dukes of Portland.
The manor of Bothal is coterminous with that of the parish. On the south side it overlaps the parish of Sheepwash, which probably, as above explained, was the more ancient foundation, being a Bridge * Hospital ' founded by the Church, possibly the Bishop as Pontifex Maximus. The manor commands the only other fords (at Bothal and Stakeford) between Morpeth and the sea, and the lord could take toll from travellers who were not protected by the Church. (The name of the ascent to the north from Sheepwash Bridge, 'Thieves' Bank,' suggests another kind of toll to which unfortunate travellers were subject.) The manor runs in between those held by the Barons de Merlay at Morpeth, Ulgham, and Longhorsley ; the policy of the Planta- genets being to divide the bundle of sticks: and is of a straggling shape. The whole is subject to tithes, but the demesne lands at Bothal and Cockle Park (Hebburn Demesne), and in a lesser degree Causey Park and Tritlington Demesne, held by the lord himself, are freed from tithes by paying a very small modus ; a good illustration of the personal character which governed the dedication of the tithes to the Church.
Old Moor, Middle Moor, New Moor, Pegswood Moor, in Bothal, Earsdon Moor, in Hebburn, probably point to the nature of the occupation, as common land, rather than to the character of the soil. Hodgson thinks that Pendmoor, a name now lost, might be the original of Old Moor.
In an inquisition made in the reign of Edward I., called Tes^ de Nevill, mention is made of New Pendmore, as well as New Moor and Old Moor. Weteworth, a place which cannot now be located, is there mentioned, as well as Erdisdon, now Earsdon, and Ersingdon, now Ashington. Possibly Pendmore may have been what is now known as Coneygarth, and Coney- garth Moor or Fell-'em-down,

In another inquisition in the reign of Elizabeth it is mentioned that 5,000 acres of moor (or common) belonged to the manor of Bothal, which includes only 12,000 acres in all, or 15,930 if the manor and parish are held to be the same.
Longhirst, which till lately consisted of a number of freehold cottages, was probably the relic of the ancient copyholders, being the only village of that character in the parish : possibly with the exception of Earsdon.
Causey Park, as the name points out, was situated on an ancient causeway which probably ran from Brinkburn Priory, past Longhorsley, where there is a pele tower, to Causey Park, also an ancient pele tower, to Cockle Park, another pele tower, and Bothal, and perhaps by Longhirst to Sheepwash and Tyne- mouth, connecting military posts and Church establishments. The old lanes can be traced, and even remains of causeways existed till lately, notably near Ulgham Cockles. Bothal Castle, with its dependent tower at Cockle Park, forms part of a chain of fortified places and beacon hills, stretching from the border at Harbottle to the coast, of which traces are found in Harbottle Castle, Hepple, Tosson, Whitton Tower, Stanton and Long- horsley, Cockle Park, Bothal, Delaval and Tynemouth, diverging by the castles of Morpeth, Ogle, Belsay, to Newcastle.
There are several names of places which either do not exist at present or are known by other names. Horseclose house, Woodhouses, Washing-well house, Bothal Moorhouse, Bothal- barns wash-house, are not known. Gallowhouse may possibly be now known as High Hirst, and Stakeford house as Low Blackctose. Wellhouse may be either Washing-well house or Wellheads. Bankhouse may be now known as Climbing Tree, a supposed corruption of St. Clement's Tree. * House ' seems generally to denote the farmhouse. Waterside House may be what is now Bothalhaugh garden house.
Ashington and Sheepwash were by this time joined with Bothal, but at one time the two townships formed a small parish by itself, about 600 acres only in extent, of which 112 acres were glebe, and of these 34^ acres were situated across the river, in what was then the county of Durham, commonly known as the Bishoprick. (There is reference in one entry to * Boshiptown (cleai'ly Bishopton) in Bishoprick.')

NevtU) was a manor: the farmhouse has some signs of its having been a house of some dignity : there are arms carved over the door : and a large walled garden. Mention is made of the * small village ' of Ashington. Also there occurs a place called Ashington Gate House. At the time when the Registers begin, it belonged to Mr. Patricries (sic) Crow, and it remained in that family till the Duke of Portland bought it in 1792. Lord Ruther- ford was living in it in 1709, Mr. Mark Ogle from 1714 to 1719. There are not many names now found which appear in the first volume. The Sharps of Pegsworth (now spelled Pegswood) remain, but lately the male line has died out, and the family is represented in the female line by the Anguses of Whitefield and Climbing Tree, and the Joblings of Butterwell. Mr. Milburn of Cockle Park, was evidently a person of some note ; his name occurs in the first year of the Hebburn Register (1680), and possibly the last of the family was buried at Bothal in 1763. Cockle Park is an old pele tower, in the chapelry of Hebburn, in the parish of Bothal, but he seems to have had a burial place at Bothal, and probaby one of his family had a farm at Newmoor. There were two families of Lawson at Longhirst. One known then as the Lawsons of Oldmoor had a sudden rise in the first half of last century, built a fine house (now the property of Sir James Joicey), flourished like Job's gourd in the time of the 'Coal Famine' of 1873, and like it collapsed. The family names of this branch seem to have been William and Edward. The other, whose favourite Christian name seems to have been Thomas, was then known as Lawson of Longhirst. They lived in what is now known as Longhirst Grange, and have died out in the male line, being represented in the female line by the Bells of Harlow Hill and of Landrick. In a rate book made in 1663 the names of Widow Lawson and Robert Lawson occur for Long- hirst, and Margaret Lawson for Old Moor. In 1673 Thomas Lawson, sen. and jun., William Lawson, Thos. Sadler, and Robert Straker agreed to a division of Longhirst common. The name of Bootiman, spelled in various ways, occurs often enough, connected with Longhirst. The last of the name died not long ago in Newcastle at a good old age, having lived for many years highly respected at Bothal. Possibly the family may be represented in the present day by Tom Bootiman, the champion slipper, who lives at Harbottle, and who is no longer ascriptus

glebcB, but fast becoming a lord of the soil. Ann Bootiman, of Alwinton, in which parish Harbottle is situated, is entered at Hebburn as the wife of Thomas Watson, in 1809.
To return to the names of places. If Bankhouse is now Climbing Tree farm, and it is probable, as the Register records Mr. Edward Verdy and his wife and children living there, Bank- houses also denotes an old peripatetic landsale colliery, which has disappeared within the last few years, and the cottages with it. Its place is taken by Pegswood colliery. The collieries at Pegsworth are mentioned in a deed of bargain and sale under forfeiture by the Commonwealth about 1650. On the Restora- tion, the estate came back to the first Duke of Newcastle, the son and heir of Lady Ogle of Bothal. Wellheads must have been a place of some importance, as Wellheads Gatehouse is mentioned, and certainly two families were living there at the same time. The last remnant, a single-roomed cottage, has lately been pulled down.
Other names which remain are Sadler, the last of whom has but lately given up farming in the parish. There was also a Sadler of Tritlington, 1705. His family eventually bought one or more farms in Tritlington from the Threlkelds, and the family is represented by Mr. John Davison of Ulgham, lately deceased. The names of Gallon (farmer, lately died out), Crozier and Rutter (in the neighbourhood), Learmouth, Marshall, Robson, Hind- haugh, Moor, Anderson (lately died out), and Jobling are also found from the earliest years to the present time.
Thomas Woodman, of Heron's Close, occurs in 1703, and it was only lately that the Woodmans, of Morpeth, sold the farm to Mr. Bainbridge, of Espley.
Tyzack, of Hebburn, occurs in 1691, and remained till about 1874, possibly on the same farm. The above, George, son of Joseph Tyzack, baptized in 1691, was Chapelwarden in 1735.
The following ages represent an unusual proportion of long lives. From 1801 to 181 2 there were 25 deaths recorded out of a total of 1 27 people above 80, and their average comes to 88^.
The same century closes with another instance of long lives. At Bothal, in 1893, there died within nine days of each other, two sisters and a brother, John Sharp, the last in the male line of the old family of Sharp of Pegswood, their ages being 91, 84, and 79, and averaging about 85.

In the Register of Hebburn, from 1798 to 181 2» 18 deaths are recorded out of 140 of people of 80 and upwards, and the average of their ages comes to 84.
Another curiosity is found in the proportion of girls to boys in the following years : —

When a son and heir was born to the house, the old gardener expressed his pleasure, adding 'there are ower mony lassies in the world.' ' Hout man,' answered the nurse, * div' ye no ken there is maist sawn of the best crop.'
The Registers for the beginning of the last century disclose that weavers were to be found in most of the hamlets.
In Hebburn Chapelry the family of Embleton, formerly spelled Emelton, still exists in Mr. Thomas Embleton, of Earsdon, a frequent Chapel warden, and Mrs. Ornsby, of Fenrother ; the Gallons, till lately, farmed in the same township, but there are no other families which can be traced so far back. The Har- bottles were a great family, but the last of them died a short time ago. But the most remarkable family was that of the James's, of which one member was clerk when the Registers began, and the clerkship remained in that family, in unbroken succession, till about ten years ago, a space of more than 200 years. Where the entry is illegible, or where there is no entry at all, I have indicated it by [d/an)(], and where any doubt as to the name existed, by a query.
The letters lie, in the Marriage Registers indicate that the Marriage was solemnized by License : where this does not occur it was in all cases performed after the Publication of Banns.

It is worth recording that at Bothal and Hebbum, as well as in other parishes, the Parish Clerk seems to have considered it part of his office to sign the Register as witness to Marriages. Possibly the signature of Michael Robson, which heads the list of Churchwardens, may have been that of the Parish Clerk.

A very large number for 1688, 1690.
It is a copy certified by the Rector and Churchwardens in 17659 written on vellum, bound in rough brown calf, and measures 14 X 7^ in. It has 72 pages written upon and 13 pages blank. The book includes Christenings, Marriages, and Burials for each year in irregular order. The year begins on March 25th, but in two or three instances the entries begin before that date.
II. Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, 1724 — 1768.
Measures 13^ x 6}i in., bound (evidently re-bound) in smooth dark brown leather, a good deal worn. The leaves are of vellum, and contains 86 pages, in original writing, part of which is not decipherable. On the fly-leaf at the beginning is an entry,* and on the inside of the binding are certain calcula- tions, probably with reference to the dates, and the following in pencil : " Stafford Rev. Christ buried 14 April 1736.*'
IIL Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, 1769 — 1804.
Is bound in vellum, and measures 12^ x 7^ in. ; 52 leaves of parchment in original handwriting ; good ; and very similar all through, though there are certain differences to be seen. The Roister is signed on every page by the Rector, or Curate, and Churchwardens. From 1797 — 1804 the entries of Register as to Baptisms and Burials are in columns, with very full particulars, especially as to the parentage of the children baptized.
IV. Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, 1805 — 1812.
Bound in dark rough brown leather ; parchment ; ruled in columns ; size iy}i x 14^ in. Signed every year by the Rector, or Curate, and Churchwardens.
* May the 8th beings Saturday, 1725, The Rig^ht Noble and Honourable Edward, Earl of Oxford and Mortimer, visited his Castle and Church of Bothal, his Chaplain and Mr. Morley, with several others of his Lordship's attendants and servants. [His Lordship g^ve me five shillings, and Mr. Morley gave me one shillinef.] His Lordship ordered then a schoolhonse and dwelling- house to be built for the master, and for the use of all school- masters that shall succeed the present schoolmaster.

V. Makxiagss, 1754 — 1812.
Is a book measiuing^ 11^ x 10 in. , stron^y bound in brown rough calf, in fair preservation. The leaves are of stout paper, ruled in red by hand. The entries of the Marriages take up 67 pages at one end, the Banns 43 pages at the other end. The handwriting varies, but is good and clear. The Marriages are entered briefly in the books which contain the Christenings and Burials.
VI. Baptisics, Marriagcs, and Burials, 1805 — 181 2.
Is a book measuring 17)^ x 14)^ in., strongly bound in rough calf, in good preservation. The leaves are of parchment, ruled by hand, 46 in number, of which only 22 pages are filled. The handwriting is good and clear, but varies. Each page is signed by the Rector, or Curate, and Churchwardens. At the end are full printed specimens of entries, and the Bishop of Durham's letter, dated 1797, requiring this form to be used.
