PEEFACE.

In presenting- to the public the Directory for the County of Forfar, I trust it will be received in the same spirit as has prompted me in compiling- it. I cannot g-o so far as to assert that no faults have inadvertently crept in, but I do most un- hesitatingly affirm, neither trouble nor expense has deterred me from endeavouring- to make it as complete a work as possible of the kind ever yet published.

I desire to tender my grateful thanks to all who have so kindly assisted me in my arduous work, and T hope it will be found not only satisfactory, but also useful to all classes.

FORFARSHIRE.

THE County of Forfar or Angus, bounded on the west by Perth- shire, on the north and north-east by Aberdeenshire and Kincardineshire, on the east by the German Ocean, and on the south by the estuary of the Tay, by which it is separated from Fifeshire, is 38 miles in extent from north to south, 36 miles from east to west in the widest part, and has about 36 miles of coast line — 23 of which are on the German Ocean, and over 12 miles on the Firth of Tay. The surface is very irregular, hills and valleys alternating. A portion of the Grampian range of mountains, called the Benchinnan Range, lies in Forfarshire, some of the peaks of which are considerably over 3,000 feet high. The Catlaw hill in the parish of Kingoldrum is 2, 196 feet in height, and the Sidlaw range of hills has an altitude of 1,400 feet in the highest part. Some very beautiful and extensive views of the surrounding country and of the Valley of Strathmore, which lies between the Sidlaws and Grampians, are to be had from these eminences. The principal rivers which run through the county are the North Esk, South Esk, Isla, and the Lunan. The lochs are Loch Lee in the parish of Lochlee, Loch Brandy in the parish of Clova Forfar Loch, Rescobie, Lundie, and Lintrathen, in their respective parishes of the same name, and Balgavies near the Auldbar Railway Station, but there are none of them of considerable extent. Lintrathen Loch, about 2 miles in circumference, is the source from which Dundee draws its greatest supply of water for domestic use and sanitary and other purposes.

Forfarshire is the chief seat of the Scotch linen manufacture, and besides exports cattle, corn, salmon, and paving-stones. There are 54 parishes in the county, and its population at the time the last census was taken in 1881 numbered 266,360, having increased nearly 30,000 in ten years. Area of the County, 890 square miles. Acreage, 569,840. Valuation for 1886-87 :— Lands, £522,952 18s. 2d. '; Railways, £56,307 ; Water Works, £25,679. Gross total,

£604,938 18s. 2d. The chief towns are Dundee, Arbroath, Montrose Forfar, Brechin, Broughty Ferry, and Kirriemuir — Forfar being the county town.

Four Members of Parliament are returned from Forfarshire — one for the County, two for the Burgh of Dundee, and one for the Montrose Burghs, embracing Arbroath, Montrose, Forfar, Brechin, and the town of Bervie in Kincardineshire.

BEST AND CHEAPEST IN THE MARKET.

Prof. Stirling, Owen's College, Manchester,

says : — " One of the finest Semolinas from wheat is made by Mr. John F. White, of Aberdeen and Dundee. It is a very nutritious substance. One must be careful not to confound this substance with similar products obtained from Indian Corn, as the latter consists almost entirely of starch."

R. De Bruce Trotter, L.F.P.S.G., L.R.C.P.E., Perth, says : — " Your Semolina is of excellent quality. It is not only very palatable, but of the utmost dietetic value, and on this account must command an extensive sale, not only for the use of invalids, but on account of its high nutritive value for the daily food of children."

Wm. Jago, F.C.S., F.I.O., Brighton, says:— "Your Semolina is exceptionally fine. I give it a very decided prefer- ence over Rice Semolinas, Corn Flours, and other almost pure starches, as an article of food for children and invalids."

1887-88.

DUNDEE,

With the Parishes of LIFF and BENVIE, MAINS and

STRATHMARTINE ; and the Villages of BIRKHILL,

DOWNFIELD, and INVERGOWRIE.

DUNDEE, which is the principal seat of the linen and jute manufactures, although not the county town, is the largest town in Forfarshire, and is situated on the banks of the Tay, about 9^ miles west from the mouth of that estuary. Historically it figures in connection with Prince David of Hunting- don, Edward I. of England, Sir William Wallace, the Duke of Lancaster in 1385, the Reformer Wishart, the Marquis of Montrose, General Monck, and Graham of Claverhouse. It was visited by James V., Queen Mary, James VI Charles II., and by Her present Majesty, Queen Victoria, who landed it* 1844 at the West Tidal Harbour, passing up the Middle Quay between Earl Grey and King William IV. Docks, at the top of which Quay was constructed a temporary wooden arch — which in 1848 was replaced by one built of stone, now known as the " Royal Arch," — as a memorial of the royal visit. Since then Her Majesty, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and several other members of the royal family, have honoured Dundee with their presence by paying it passing visits.

Within the last forty years Dundee has been much improved. Previous to 1847 a considerable portion of the town was supplied with water brought into the town by carts from Invergowrie and Logie and sold to the inhabitants. In that year, however, a Joint-stock Company introduced water into the town by pipes from Monikie. The right to this supply was latterly purchased by the town, but it was found, after the lapse of a number of years, to be quite inadequate to the wants of the inhabitants, and the supply has, since then, been considerably increased by the purchase of the Loch of Lintrathen. The introduction of water from Monikie was followed by a superior system of drainage, carried out in 1853-54, under the management and direction of Mr John Fulton, the then burgh surveyor, which was the means of washing away the impurities and sweetening the atmosphere of many of the closes and

lanes. Public Baths were also opened, which, after being managed for a number of years by a board of directors, were taken over by the Commis- sioners of Police in 1871, being at present managed by them on behalf of the community, and rendered so complete that they jare considered one of the best establishments of the kind in Scotland, and comprise Turkish, vapour, and private baths (salt and fresh water), and magnificent swimming baths. Again, by the Improvement Act of 1871, many old densely populated places have been purchased by the town and the buildings demolished, streets widened, and new streets formed in which spacious buildings have been erected. Amongst these improvements are the extension of the High Street by the removal of the old English Chapel (latterly known as the Union Hall) which stood at the west-end, and the taking down of the Trades Hall, which formed the eastern boundary of that street ; the widening of the Murraygate at its south end ; and the widening of Bucklemaker Wynd, now called Victoria road, which forms one of the principal outlets to the east of the town.

Dundee has two large public parks — one at the east and the other at the west end of the town. The one at the east-end is about 38 acres in extent, and bears the name of the donors, being called the Baxter Park. It cost £50,000. The west-end park, which includes the hill of Balgay, is called Balgay Park, having been formed on the estate of that name.

Dundee is the second seaport in Scotland, many of the finest vessels afloat, both steamships and sailing vessels, hailing from it. Its tonnage at the end of last year was 115,829. In 1883 (the year of the largest importation of jute) 114 vessels, many of them from 1500 to 2000 tons burthen and upwards, arrived laden with that fibre. Owing to the depression of trade, a consider- able decrease in the arrivals took place in 1884 — scarcely half the number of the previous year. In April of the year 1885, there was a fleet of these large vessels to the number of thirteen anchored in the roadstead, their draught of water preventing them from entering the docks at the then state of the tides, and the sight was really magnificent. In 1884, although there were not so many arrivals with jute from India, 104 vessels having a registered tonnage of 58,410, imported 26,895 tons of flax, tow, hemp, and codilla. Dundee has four wet docks, and two graving docks, and a patent slip. It has also ex- tensive shed accommodation on its quays, a network of rails round its docks, and powerful cranes and machine appliances for the equipment and speedy discharging and loading of vessels. In shipbuilding it carries on an extensive trade — principally in the building of iron vessels, although from its being the principal port whence the seal and whale fishing fleet sails, it also employs a considerable number of workmen in building and repairing vessels suited for the Arctic regions. Machine-making is largely carried on, as also the tanning of skins ; but the spinning and manufacturing of jute and linen goods may be considered the staple trade.

Dundee is connected by railway with all parts of the country, and the Tay Bridge, now being rebuilt, has its northern terminus at it. Tramways have been introduced into the town within recent years, and steam power has just been applied to that system of transit. An Act has been passed for a line of railway to encircle the town, whereby the higher parts of the town may be brought more readily into communication with the centre for business purposes. The telephone system has likewise been introduced.

There are also numerous educational institutions in and about Dundee, many of which are of a high order. The University College, founded by the munificence of the late Miss Baxter of Balgavies, and her relative, the late

Directory.] DUNDEE. 5

Dr. John Boyd Baxter ; the High School endowed by various bequests, and ■which, four years ago, received the handsome sum of £20,000 from the late Baillie Harris, who also gave £10,000 to the School Board to avert an action by that Board to claim the High School, the outcome of which was the erection of the Harris Institution by the Board in Park place ; the Morgan Hospital, built from a bequest of more than £70,000. The town has a Free Library, and many charitable and benevolent institutions, such as the Royal Infirmary, the Royal Lunatic Asylum (which has recently been removed from Albert Street to a new building at Westgreen — the old Asylum buildings being now occupied by the Messrs G. & P. Barrie, for the manufacture of their aerated waters), the Ox-phan Institution, the Blind Institution, the Deaf and Dumb Institution, a Ragged School, a Sailors' Home, the « Mars ' Training Ship for boys, and others.

Dundee has now its quarterly Courts held by the Lords of Justiciary, which were first opened by the Lord Justice Clerk in the spring of 1865, having formerly, along with the other towns of the county, to send its criminals to Perth to be tried.

In the grounds of the Albert Institute, to the building of which the late Sir David Baxter and members of the family subscribed £13,000, and where the Free Library and Museum is situated, are three statues — one erected to the memory of George Kinloch, Esq., the first member of parliament for Dundee after the passing of the Reform Bill of 1832 ; another to the memory of James Carmichael, Esq. (one of two brothers, the founders of the firm of Carmichael & Co. , Engineers, Dundee), who invented many improvements connected with the steam engine and with the iron trade, freely giving the public the benefit of all his inventions ; and the third to the memory of our national poet, Burns.

As regards places of amusement, Dundee has Her Majesty's Theatre and Opera House, one of the most handsome and complete theatres recently erected in the provinces, accommodating nearly 1500 people, divided into five classes of seats. The stage is very large and has the most modern improve- ments introduced in its construction. The prevailing tones in the internal decoration are cream and gold, relieved by the warmer colour of deep crimson, in which the seats are upholstered. Every precaution has been taken to secm-e the comfort and safety of the public. An iron curtain closes the pros- cenium opening. The cost of the building was about £15,000. The lessee is MrW. M-Farland, who has catered for the amusement loving public of Dundee for the past 18 years, and who is also lessee of the theatre in Aberdeen which bears the same name.

The conveniences for strangers visiting the town are numerous, there being an abundance of temperance, coffee, and refreshment places, some of them largely patronised by business travellers and others, such as Lamb's Hotel in Reform Street, Mathers' Hotel inCrichton and Whitehall Streets, and Young's Dining Rooms, 84 and 86 Nethergate, with many others in various parts of the town got up by parties taking an interest in the temperance cause. Its hotels and restaurants can compare favourably with those in any town in Scotland.

Dundee, with Lochee, a suburb, now sends two members to parliament, having received a second member in 1868. The population at the last census was 140.239.
