1969 Annual Exhibition Contemporary American Painting December 16, 1969- February 1, 1970

Whitney Museum of American Art 945 Madison Avenue, New York

Helen Frankenthaler Chatham Light

Foreword

The Whitney Museum's Annual Exhibitions of Contemporary American Art have been held, in one form or another, since 1932. Work is selected by the Museum's staff and is invited, not juried. Follow- ing a tradition established by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney when the Museum was founded, no prizes are given; instead, a number of works are usually purchased from each Annual for the Museum's permanent collection. Today the exhibitions are de- voted to painting and to sculpture in alternate years.

The purpose of the Annuals has always been to survey the current state of American art. Hence only recent works are shown. Hence, too, the geographi- cal coverage is as wide as the Museum can make it. Aided by a Ford Foundation grant, the Museum's curators travel extensively to search out the most interesting paintings and sculpture being produced in various parts of the country.

But it has become more apparent every year that an exhibition of this size can no longer even approxi- mate a cross section of the creative trends of the moment. The growing number of serious artists, the growing size of their works, and the growing tendency of both painting and sculpture to escape their tradi- tionally self-contained limits and become events in the environment all militate against the possibility of a "fair" survey. Increasingly we have elected to concentrate (insofar as we are physically able) on presenting those new directions which seem to us to be generating the most creative excitement, as well as representing those established artists whose work has deepened, grown or changed in ways that con- tribute more than a repetition of past success to the development of our contemporary art.

"While my work is in an area which could be considered the heir to Western painting and sculpture, I do not consider it either 'painting' or 'sculpture' but rather an 'art investigation.' There are two reasons for this. One is that the word art denotes the general context of my activity, while the word 'painting' and 'sculpture' ascribe particular qualities to the materials used within my art investigation in such a way as to imply a relationship between my art and earlier art on morphological grounds. Secondly, one of the further disadvantages of specific terms such as painting and sculpture is their 'defining' character, and the subsequent limitation of the area of consideration. This limiting would seem to me to be contrary to the nature of art in our time."
